ANCESTRAL HOMES AND OLD HOUSES IN GASAN

Gasan is an old, serene town with houses that have withstood the test of time and nature. More than 400 years old, it is the second oldest town in Marinduque, next to Boac, the capital town. Because of its peaceful and solitary atmosphere, the sleepy town has been regarded as a haven for tourists and retirees.

In the poblacion (town proper) there are several old houses that had been the dwelling place of some illustrious families and respected town leaders of the bygone era. Some descendants and relatives of those families still live in the old houses while others (those who have migrated abroad or work in other places) have entrusted the maintenance of their ancestral homes to caretakers and kind neighbors.
But there are old houses that are decaying, seemingly abandoned and left to crumble with time. The Alcantara house, for instance, is now in ruins and has been left to a forgotten time and place near the old Nieva Bridge in Barangay Uno.

The oldest house in Gasan is located in Barangay Tres, beside the Oria family residence. The house was built before the Philippine Revolution of 1896 and owned by Martina Luces Luna, wife of Agaton San Ignacio. It is now a historical site.
The Luna family who once lived in the house was also a supporter of Filipino resistance against Americans. The Gasan Historical Society wrote in the historical marker that “on April 28, 1900, Don Baltazar Luces Luna (brother of Martina) together with Don Esteban Sevilla, Don Mariano Rodriguez, Don Jose de Leon and many others traveled on foot to Boac. They offered food, money and men to Commandant Martin Lardizabal, Politico-Military Governor of Marinduque”.
The Luna house was also used as shelter and "hideout" by Apolinario Mabini, the brains of the Revolution, who fled the pursuing American soldiers during the Philippine-American War. He was later captured and exiled to Guam. Sickly and afraid to die as an exile, he took a pledge of allegiance to the United States and returned to the country. He died from cholera in Batangas on May 13, 1903 at 38 years old.

Some of the old houses and ancestral homes in Gasan still stand today, silent witnesses to events that occurred with the passage of time and testament to the rich historical and cultural heritage of a small, humble town.
