Gasan's Sound of Music

A brass band greeted the day to celebrate the Gasan town fiesta this year (May 19, 2022), the first time after three years of lockdown due to the pandemic. The band played in the procession of the Catholic Church with the image of the patron saint, San Jose.

Gasan is gifted with talented and creative people who made contributions to its culture through music.
During the 80s, the Zoleta brass band, under the leadership of Mang Timog (Vicente) was the main staple in town events and celebrations such as fiesta, Independence Day, Christmas, New Year and even funerals. Mang Timog also owns the Vicor Band which played at the dance party held at the open tennis court beside the municipal building.
The Vicor band is composed of the young and talented youth of the town during the late 70s and early 80s. They were: Hernani Sigue (composer of the Marinduque hymn), the Asuncion brothers (Alex and Jim), Dennis Mantaring, Mr. Canapit (drummer), Mr. Sevilla (bass player), Marlo Bobet de Leon, Mr Zoleta.
One lesser known band is the string quartet from Barangay Tiguion, made up of a violinist, a bass player and two guitarists. They played mostly during Santacruzan and in small gatherings.
The Kalutang band from Barangay Bangbang provided a unique musical sound made by players who strike a pair of sticks of various sizes to create the distinct sound of a wooden xylophone ensemble.
School teachers also contributed by singing during "Putong", a welcome ceremony for visitors of the town.
They all contributed to the sound and music that is distinctly and uniquely from Gasan.
